Suffolk-based housebuilder has welcomed Oliver Mullan as Trainee Surveyor, sponsoring his degree apprenticeship.
Oliver Mullan joined Denbury Homes in September 2024 as a Trainee Surveyor on a five-year degree apprenticeship, which sees him combine work with an honours degree in Quantity Surveying at Anglia Ruskin University.
Originally planning to study economics and finance, Oliver’s growing interest in property led him to explore opportunities in the construction sector. Oliver applied to Denbury Homes as a Trainee Surveyor, with the company agreeing to be his sponsor for the degree apprenticeship.
Gaining experience across the business
Based at Denbury Homes’ Head Office in Westley, close to Bury St Edmunds, Oliver spends four days a week working closely with Commercial Manager, Will Barnard, and other members of the commercial team. The other day is spent on his academic studies at the university’s campus in Chelmsford.
Oliver shares, “I currently support the commercial team with arranging the different trades for the developments. This includes putting our requirements out to tender, tender analysis, material estimates, drafting order documents and addressing variations. I try to get out on-site whenever I can to gain additional understanding and help build personal relationships with the contractors and site teams.”

“The degree apprenticeship is a great option. Mixing real-world experience with formal study is really helping me understand how theory and practice come together. Plus, I am not racking up student debt, something my brothers – I’m a triplet – are quite envious of!”
Life beyond the desk
Oliver has quickly become part of the Denbury Homes community, as has his miniature Labradoodle Oscar, who has officially joined the team of Denbury Dogs that regularly visit the office.
He is also a member of Denbury Homes’ team for the Housebuilder Challenge 2025, joining colleagues for a hike through the Yorkshire Dales to raise money for the Youth Adventure Trust.
