Laxfield named one of the UK’s greatest villages

What makes a great village? Suffolk does have plenty of candidates but most recently Laxfield, near Stradbroke, was recognised as one of the very best, with a place on The Telegraph’s list of the UK’s greatest villages.

In a quest to find British villages untouched by mass tourism, the newspaper consulted experts from across the country and compiled an exclusive list of 30 uncrowded British villages that retain their character through medieval pubs, churches and an active welcoming community.

Laxfield was noted as being “a proper village minding its own business amid north Suffolk’s spaghetti of rural lanes.”

Home to an eye-catching timber frame and herringbone-brick Guildhall built in 1515 and the imposing All Saints Church containing one of the country’s finest Seven Sacrament fonts, the village is steeped in history.

Something that makes Laxfield particularly special is its great local pub, The Kings Head – or The Low House to locals – a thatched 16th Century Inn with no bar. Beer, including local ales, is served directly from the tap room casks.

As well as the guildhall, church and two pubs, the village also offers a primary school and convenience store – all within walking distance of Blacksmiths Way!
